size & vibe
With a population of just over one million people, Trujillo is a lively coastal city that feels approachable and community-oriented. It’s not a common international tourist destination, which means daily life here feels authentic and locally driven rather than shaped by tourism. The historic center and surrounding neighborhoods are walkable and full of everyday rhythm—plazas, local cafés, markets, and neighborhood shops. Trujillo feels energetic yet relaxed, making it easy for families to settle in, explore at a comfortable pace, and experience real life in northern Peru.
food
Food in Trujillo is comforting, social, and deeply tied to regional traditions along Peru’s northern coast—within a country known for world-class cuisine. Meals are often shared and enjoyed at a relaxed pace, featuring local staples like rice, beans, fresh seafood, soups, stews, and traditional dishes found in neighborhood eateries, home kitchens, and local markets. The food culture is approachable for kids and adults alike, making it easy for families to enjoy familiar flavors while also discovering why Peruvian cuisine is celebrated around the world.

Compared to life in the U.S., daily life in Trujillo moves at a more relationship-centered, family-oriented pace. Shared midday meals and time spent together in neighborhoods and plazas are an important part of daily life, and personal relationships often take priority over strict schedules. Everyone grew a lot, especially our kids. They became more flexible and adaptable to different situations. It was great to push them out of their comfort zone. We learned a lot about different cultures, including ancient cultures like Moche and Inka.
We learned a ton about the culture and what it's like to experience another country. It was eye-opening for our kids to see how other people in the world live.
We had a great experience with our City Friends (Belina and her kids). We got to see them several times and experience their home and family. It was truly a highlight for us all!
